Mummified bodies found in Iskodar village
On the 31st of October, 2024, Temurbek Saidi, a resident of Iskodar village, Aini district, visited the National Museum and reported the existence of a grave with a mummified body in the Sari-Maini section of Iskodar village.
The management of the State Institution ‘National Museum’ paid special attention to this topic and organised an archaeological expedition to this area in order to conduct research and search activities.
On the basis of Permit No. *0026* issued by the authorised state body – the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tajikistan, a specialist from the Department of Archaeology and Numismatics of the National Museum Bobomulloev Muhsin was mobilised.
As a result of the research, it was found that there is indeed a two-chamber tomb in the Sari Main area, with more than 20 bodies (skeletons) buried inside. Of these, 3 are mummified and 1 is in very good condition. This mummified body, its arms, legs, back and especially its face are almost intact.
The historical significance of this mummified body lies in the rarity of such a discovery, with this being the first instance of such a find within the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan. Similar mummified bodies have been discovered in the Tarim Basin of Kashgar, China (in the early twentieth century) and in the Kyrgyz Republic (in 1956).
The management of the National Museum has decided to organize a scientific and archaeological expedition in the upcoming season with the involvement of specialists in this field to conduct a full investigation and study of the Sari-Maini monument, as well as to transfer the mummified body to the National Museum for public display..
